The odds are low, the risks are high – photographer Reuben Krabbe is determined to capture an impossible photo of a skier in front of the 2015 solar eclipse Outdoor photographer Reuben Krabbe is a fan-favorite, and his images have appeared in FREESKIER magazine countless times over the years. A duo of shots can be labeled as, arguably, his most famous: a 2013 image he shot of Tobin Seagel skiing under the aurora borealis in Canada’s Yukon Territory and “Eclipse,” the shot of Cody Townsend descending a line in Svalbard, Norway, in front of a Reuben Krabbe photo. Next up, he blew minds (ours included) for his work on ‘Eclipse’ – a film / photography project that found Reuben and a team of skiers backcountry wandering through the Norwegian Arctic with the impossible task of lining skiers up between a fleeting solar eclipse and a big-ass camera. De senaste tweetarna från @ReubenKrabbe My favourite line from Reuben Krabbe’s new 12-minute film Nebula dropping this week, is uttered by skier Nick McNutt. His facial hair and toque are caked in ice and his breath escapes in visible puffs of vapour as he looks at the display on the back of Krabbe’s camera and says, “Woah…skiing in space!” Yes. Exactly. But, photographer Reuben Krabbe saw the eclipse as a once in a lifetime opportunity to capture an image so rare, so elusive, that many thought it was impossible: In March of 2015, Krabbe and a team of skiers, guides, and camera crew set out to Svalbard in the high Arctic. ©Reuben Krabbe (Editor’s Note: The following is an excerpt from an amazing multimedia story in Powder magazine – Shutterbug’s sister publication – by Sierra Davis with images by photographer Reuben Krabbe.

Yet despite the ever present threat of polar bears and kill-at-will cold, not to mention the rarely present clear sky needed to pull this off, the planets aligned and photographer Reuben Krabbe did just that. Photos by Reuben Krabbe Three years of planning went into capturing a once-in-a-lifetime moment when photographer Reuben Krabbe, and skiers Brody Leven, Chris Rubens, and Cody Townsend (plus their support team) ventured to the remote arctic islands of Svalbard, Norway, to ski during a total solar eclipse. In 2015, Reuben Krabbe and a team of skiers traveled to the Arctic Circle to ski remote mountains and shoot a total solar eclipse while doing so. Battling extreme weather conditions, they made the long, arduous trek to Svalbard, one of only two places in the world where the total solar eclipse could be seen. His ambition: to capture a skier in motion during one of nature’s rarest phenomena – a total solar eclipse.
